Mohan Lal, Gill's father said that he went to Canada just four days ago on September 6 to be with his wife Shami.
Four days after going to Canada, the body of Gagandeep Gill of Nauli village in Jalandhar was found under mysterious conditions in Barrie city of Ontario late on Sunday.
Mohan Lal, Gill’s father said that he went to Canada just four days ago on September 6 to be with his wife Shami.
“Gagandeep did a video call to his mother on Sunday and said that he was very sleepy. He had just started adjusting to the time difference. However, we got a call around 2.30 a.m. on Monday that he passed away. We just couldn’t believe it and his mother, Seema, is still in a state of shock,” Lal said.
He added that he spent over Rs 30 lakh, a considerable amount of which he borrowed from his friends and relatives, to send his son to Canada and now he is broke.
“I don’t even have the money to get the body back to Jalandhar. We have appealed to the government to help us so that we can perform the last rites,” he said, adding that some Punjabi residents in Canada are collecting funds to help and the government should also help.
Seema added that her son got married to Shami, both in their mid-20s, in November 2021.
“A month after the wedding, Shami left for Canada in December 2021 on a study visa. Shami returned to Punjab after completing her first semester and stayed here for some time. She again returned to Canada to complete her studies and my son was supposed to join her there. We spent our everything so that they could stay happily together and now my son is gone and I don’t even know what happened,” she said.
