The Mumbai zonal unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Thursday said that it has busted a drug racket being operated in the city and seized drugs worth around Rs 75 lakh.

"The NCB-Mumbai busted the suspected interstate drug syndicate and has seized 500 gms of Mephedrone. Two persons including Mumbai based distributor has been arrested in the matter," an official said.

The NCB said, in wake of heightened security for ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024, in pursuance of intensive technical intelligence investigation, NCB-Mumbai has successfully cracked an interstate drug syndicate operating from Mumbai. Information was gathered through credible source wherein a Mumbai based network was actively involved in Mephedrone trafficking.

It said that the intelligence networks were alerted to collect further details about the syndicate. After extensive analysis, a Mahim, Mumbai based person named L.G. Khan was identified as the local carrier of the drug. During surveillance, information was affirmed wherein L.G Khan was tasked to transport a consignment of Mephedrone via train.

The anti-drugs agency further said that on April 30, information was gathered wherein Khan had planned to travel from Borivali Railway Station in Mumbai along with the drug consignment. The team of NCB officials proceeded to the spot and setup a perimeter to zero down the suspect with the drug. He was physically identified and was intercepted which resulted in recovery of 500 gms of Mephedrone.

The NCB said, during the spot questioning, Khan disclosed about his handler named U.U. Khan based in Mahim area of Mumbai. A follow up NCB team proceeded to the Mahim location and after extensive search in the area, U.U Khan was apprehended at his home.

Both the suspects were taken into NCB custody.

The investigations revealed that U.U Khan's name has been registered in multiple criminal cases and he was arrested in NDPS matter also for which he was presently out on bail, the NCB said.
